Cont Air filter bracket question

The bracket that extends between the tom of the air filter and tapers like a triangle to the bittom of the engine....whats it for? I neglected to install it on new C90 rebuild and after looking at it more throughly....it is so thin and flexable its hard to believe its there for support. Is it possibly to keep cold air off the carb? Some have large holes punched in them. Just wondering if anyone knows.
