Going through an old O-540 logbook and the first entry is “zero since chrome major overhaul”. I have never encountered that phrase before. It is the first page of logbooks for that engine in the file and very few entries showing a total time but those that do are based on that “zero”. The entry was made by a certified repair station in 1983.

It has been my understanding for the last 30 or so years that only the factory can “zero” an engine. Assuming that was the case in 1983, I do not think this engine has been legal for 39 years. Am I wrong?
