Bungee replacement by owner

Considering Appendix A of FAR Part 43 lists "Replacing elastic shock absorber cords on landing gear." as an approved item that may be accomplished by a non-A&P owner pilot, I assume this includes removing the shock strut from the airplane itself? Is it even possible to replace them without removing the shock strut?

I'm planning on using the engine hoist method to change mine out.
