There are many threads out there on Cubs that had engine changes, model changes, or a combination of the two. Here is an interesting situation I found:
Not my Cub of course, but another un-named 1938 out there - The Cub started as a J-3 under the original type certificate ATC660 since it is an early Cub, in the 40's it was converted to a J3F-60 by a 337 which changed model, made the modifications to increase gross weight and make it a J3F-60, installed a Franklin engine and issued new data plate. So the airplane from 1948 until now as been registered as a J3F-60. Side note: the S/N is so early, that it doesn't appear on A-692 since it was built before the prototype for A-692.
Continued from following pages:
Flash forward to 2008, airplane is rebuilt and a Continental A75 is installed BY Paul Babcock using his STC. The issue: Paul Babcock's STC doesn't list this early S/N since it only mirrors the S/N on the TCDS (as mentioned this S/N doesnt appear on A-692)
So: If one was to correct this paperwork issue, what is the best path forward? Try and correct the paperwork/registration to revert back to J-3 under ATC660, or a J3C-40 under A-691 (more ideal) or keep it as a J3F and get clarification on the engine STC or clean up with a new 337..... or just ignore it. It appears that currently the engine is an "illegal install".
Asking for a friend of course
