I have had three of them crack - just seems to make more noise, and when you check it it will not tighten.  Cracking may be due to under or over tightening, but more likely it is a defect in the design.

Has anyone ever heard of a C-65 prop hub being lost in flight?

Does it count to loose a skull cap spinner?

I had a prop loosen up after a hundred seventy or so hours. Several nuts loosened. The nuts were safety wired in a circle. After the retorque, I used cotter pins, a better system.  At cruise power, 2150, there was a noticable slight vibration, but throttled back to 1600 there was an unmistakabe shake. After landing and a walk around, the prop was the first thing I touched; ;you could feel it was loose.     jimmy

Hi Glenn,
I think the screw came out of the nut plate. It was loose, I thought I had fixed it by bending/re-tensioning the nutplate but evidently that was not a good fix.

The Luscombe community seems serious about their SkullCaps:

Jorgen,

Good advice indeed. I installed a skull cap on the bipe(experimental) and was provided a steel bracket with slip-on Timmermann PK plate. I can see where the fine thread screw/slip-on plate would be better. And FAA approved too.

We must be carefull buying stuff for certified aircraft. Many vendors are selling to the experimental market a product that "looks" just like an approved item, and cheaper too.

They will likely work ok if carefully installed but if anything happens, even an incident not related to the non FAA/PMA item, we would be unhappy with our decision to no use care in our purchase(or being cheap)....

One day a neighbor who knows I fly called and said "A piece of an airplane fell in my yard and landed 2 feet from where I was standing." I said "really?" I went over to look feeling sure it was some thing else. It turned out to be a skull cap spinner. I took it and went to the airport and found the C140 it came from. It had a Tinnerman nut on the brackett.
