  • Posted in thread: Is a PA11 $20k better than J3? on 06-19-2018 at 12:32 PM
I bought my J3 in 1965, and my PA11 in 1967.The 11 is faster and climbs better.I have a strong
preference for the 'feel' of the 3 controls.I would pay more for a 3 than an 11.

If It's a Mac 1A90 or 1B90 going on an O-200 with it's high rpm capability, I'd pitch it to 72
for a strong engine or 71 for a weak engine and cruise it at about 2250-2350 rpm with 55 mph
    climb at abo...

Clean the rocker bushing and rocker shaft.Could also be a sticky lifter.Pull the lifter cover,
fish the lifter body out, and clean it.

Easiest way would probably be to install a single cylinder (w/o plugs) and see if you get hard
stop interference. If you do, take off a bit of the boss till it clears. If you don't, put a

From my first response...."Champher the outer 1/8" periphery of the piston top down for head
clearance, but do not cut it down far enough to compromise the structural integrity of the top
    ring land".

Double check the birdcage against the wingroot rib to make sure you get a good 'as built'
    match.

The 90/O-200 rods are more robust. From memory, 85 rods will work OK, but I'm not at home right
now to confirm that the lengths are actually the same. I would not be concerned about the
    strength of eit...

Hey Jim, finally got to fly my new engine from don's, running a 74-42 1b90 2600rpm on climbout at 70 mph 2350 indicated 80 mph still running my 24x11x4 seems a lot stronger than my old engine

Jim, please tell me where you got the engine mount rubber adapters that mated the O-200 to the J3 engine mount? Thanks! Bob
