I would definitely have a mixture control installed. My airplane had the mixture wired full Rich when I bought it. First thing I did was install a mixture cable. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I’ve flown this airplane at 12,000 feet msl, and having a mixture control is great on several levels.

independent of starting technique, my A75 responded amazingly to the installation of Tempest spark plugs. Cold, it starts on first pull with 1/4" throttle cracked after appropriate priming and 8 cylinders with the throttle closed. Hot it starts on the first pull with the throttle closed. Replaced stock Champions. The manufacturer's tech guy actually talked me out of buying fine wires - and he was right!

I assume you are talking about 37BY plugs? Fantastic.

I'm trying to understand why some folks start cold with the throttle cracked, and hot with the throttle closed. What am I missing?

That was just Didihs and his Tempest plugs. And what he describes probably works - eight blades with throttle closed is enough gas even with throttle cracked.

Wowie zowie, Jörgen, that’s like, pretty “slick” wordplay - but then again, I shouldn’t be so surprised because, you know, you're like so “continental!”
